Judaism and prayer had been a central part of my life and a real source of spirituality before I had kids. I am now finding that my connection to prayer and the community is slipping away. This piece represents the slow erosion of my Jewish identity and how I feel like there’s very little left to keep me connected. The piece takes the shape of a tallit with part of the prayer before putting on the tallit painted on the atarah. The embroidered lines start out like stripes on a traditional tallit but are broken and fraying as they get further from the top. The tallit itself is also coming undone with large tears and the knots on the tzitzit untying. And finally, a figure at the bottom clutches onto the tzitzit, trying to hold on to what’s left of her Judaism.
