On August 27, 2007, my cousin was killed in a car accident. This piece is made up of family pictures taken in the two years after her death with a portrait of Alyssa, printed on silk organza, over those images.
When you look at the piece head on, you can see through the portrait and the images beneath are clear, but when viewing the piece from the side, Alyssa’s picture dominates and the pictures beneath fade away. This represents her constant presence in our lives. In the moment, when facing life head on, we clearly experience everything, but then there are these moments when you experience things from a distance and Alyssa’s absence is powerfully evident.
