It is said that when Adar begins, our joy is increased. On Purim, the 14th of Adar, we celebrate by dressing in costume and reading the Book of Esther, while eating, drinking and making much joyful noise. This forced happiness reminded me this year of the recent Mardi Gras celebration in New Orleans this year, when the devastation of hurricane Katrina was forced out of everyone’s minds for a short time.

The same theme appears in my own life this month as I put on a smiling face which masks the feelings within. Thus, my quilt shows a bright, happy mask over a dark, sorrowful background.
