I had a wonderful time today working with three of the three-year-old classes at Congregation Kol Ami’s Early Childhood Program. Each student made a challah cover using their favorite colors. After talking a little bit about Shabbat as a group, they started by making drawings using the colors they wanted to include in their challah covers.
Once they were satisfied with their drawings, we looked at the colors they used and each student received a background fabric the color most used in their drawings. From there, they decorated their challah covers with “fabric stickers” that I had prepared in advance using double sided fusible webbing.
When the students were happy with their challah covers, I ironed them to secure the fabric shapes to the background and returned them to the classrooms. Now, the students and their families can use these special challah covers each Shabbat at home and be reminded of the wonderful colors and feelings that Shabbat brings.
