Tallit Assembly Line

The holidays are coming, so I thought this was a good opportunity to make some new tallitot to put in my Etsy store.  I’ve been collecting beautiful tallit fabrics for the last several months and it was time for them to stop sitting on the shelf!

The first step was to find matching fabrics for the corners and attarot.  I then printed the two most common quotes for the attarot: the last two words of the blessing for putting on a tallit and the opening words of the Amidah.  I randomly selected one of these for each of the tallitot and started painting with the use of a light box.  When I do this, I tend to paint the phrases backwards since I’m right-handed and I don’t want to put my hand in wet paint.  At the end of a long day and a half of painting, I had lots of attarot ready to go!

Next, I cut the tallit fabrics to size and also cut pieces for the matching bags.  Then it was time to serge the edges, fold them under, and sew them on the regular machine for nice clean edges.

Now I have the tallit fabric and the attarot ready to go.  Next, I’ll cut the corner squares and trim the attarot to size, sew them to the tallitot, reinforce the corners where the tzitzit will go, attach the tzitzit, and make the matching bags.  By the end of next week, I hope to have several new tallitot for sale online!  If you see a pattern you like below, let me know and I’ll be sure to finish that one first!
