Midrash Tallit

Midrash Tallit

Earlier this month, sixth graders at Temple Israel Center in White Plains had the opportunity to complete tallitot based on their Bnai Mitzvah Torah portions.  See my earlier blog post to read about the beginning of this process.

Julia and her family had put much time into her tallit between the two sessions and she was able to almost complete the piece by the end of the day.  In the Torah portion for her Bat Mitzvah, God appears as a pillar of fire and cloud.  She depicted this as a cloud with bright flames on the two ends of her tallit.  Between those, she included things that make her feel closer to God: nature, her family, and her community.  On the neckband, her cousin will write the blessing for putting on the tallit.

It was a pleasure working with Julia and her family and I hope that this tallit adds a layer of meaning to her special day!

  1. What a wonderful idea for the children to do this! Very proud of my young cousin for her committment to her faith and her project. It is BEAUTIFUL and makes me very proud. Thank you Heather for doing this and congratulations Julia for completing such a wonderful and lovely project. Can’t wait to see it in person at your Bat Mitvah!
